PEKAN NABALU

(Sabah, Malaysia, 2015, digital C-type print, 61 x 61cm each, series of 3)

Pekan Nabalu is a photographic triptych taken in Pekan Nabalu, a small stopover town halfway towards the base of Mount Kinabalu, Borneo Malaysia. Set within a tourism-heavy state, the industry centres the locals on how we present ourselves culturally to others. A sojourn of interpretation, misunderstanding and surrender; a continuous landslide on one's backfoot into another generic tourism destination. Fleeting moments with cameras. A hunting and gathering of images. (Note: this was shot before the advent of the selfie and the selfie stick)
